Yesterday, Healthcare.gov opened for “window shoppers,” those that would like to get a preview of health insurance rates prior to the Exchange opening for purchasing on November 1st. I was in Harrisburg on Friday morning, presenting the concept of direct primary care to a room full of employers, employer benefits specialists, and other doctors. It was the inaugural conference of the Free Market Medical Association, Pennsylvania Chapter. For many in the audience, it was the first time that they had heard of such a thing as direct primary care. I always love the reactions I get: enthusiasm, relief, and hope for lowering cost on something so foundational as primary care.
The other day, I was at a business-to-business marketing event in which I had to give my one-minute elevator pitch for CovenantMD, six times over. I always love the reactions I get. “I feel like I should give you a standing ovation,” said one attendee. Another said, “I’ve never heard of doctors doing such a thing! That’s amazing!” It’s fun living outside the box.
This article, published Monday in the New York Times, has created quite a stir. It profiles a study that followed 14 former contestants on the show, "The Biggest Loser." The study found that over the course of six years, 13 out of the 14 contestants have regained some, most, or in some cases more than the weight they lost on the show.
I’m happy to report that our renovations have been completed and the township has given us their final blessing. So last week we threw our office doors open! Our patients can now feel free to schedule appointments in the office, though home and worksite visits are still included at no additional charge.
CovenantMD officially opens for business today, Monday, January 4. The last nine months, through penning the first words of a business plan, to launching the website in August, to speaking with several families in their homes (and Starbucks!) that wanted to “kick the tires” of CovenantMD…this has been a delightful time. So today we put flesh on the bones of our dreams, as it were.
